I listen to what many people do not have time for. The birds, bugs, wind, water, tracks and trees inform what I am. I also listen to sounds many people attempt to block out. Trains, freeways, buildings and the relentless buzz of humanity remind me of how we have come to live. From the intersection of timeless sound and postmodern noise, emerges the New West.
New West Hats is a response to the darkest moments of California history, as well as the critical present time. By using sustainable domestic wool, reclaimed vintage furs, and small batch tannery leathers, these hats are a drastic departure from the historical exploits and horrors of fur trade as well as an invitation to look outside of contemporary consumerism.
Each hat is created by hand with as much detail as possible. Each stitch, every thread, all snips and trims give the opportunity to learn and express creativity. From collecting wild botanicals to create dye baths for color, to meticulously reeding sweatbands in house, each aspect of every hat is handled with consideration.
Beyond hats, we are people in relationship with each other and the natural world. Let us create together.
